French Empire Object Of Virtue Miniature Cradle Of Rome
A Fine French 2nd Empire ormolu or gilt bronze mounted wood and ivory miniature model of the cradle of the King of Rome. French, Napoleon III period, Circa: 1860-1870. Measuring: 8" high by 4.5" wide.

This most curious object of vertu depicts the cradle of Rome. The carved wood body is extensively mounted with ormolu mounts through out. Top of cradle exhibits winged victory female figure in classical garments standing upon a gilt sphere with arms stretched up ward. The winged classical maiden is carved from a single specimen of Elephant ivory including the sphere which was gilded for contrast. The interior of the cradle boasts its original silk lining, silk linens, blanket, and lace coverlet. All textiles are hand made and original. The miniature lace cover is decorated at center with a neoclassical wreath.

A visual inventory taken of the object reveals the following: 30 seperately cast gilt bronze or ormolu mounts. Over 75+ hand made miniature brass nails. 5 hand carved sections of wood forming the main body. 1 carved Ivory statue. 5 hand made textiles exhibited in the interior.

Lost wax method of bronze casting. Hand chasing and chiseling of the surface. Original gilding still intact and present.
