An 18th century French carved classical column made of Egyptian Granite. French, circa: 1700's. Measuring: circ. around : 38.5" by 24.5" High by 12.25" across the top. Solid Specimen column weighing 300+ pounds.
A scarce and fine Egyptian granite specimen classical column. The Egyptian pink granite has hughes of Pink, Grey, White, and Black. This same Granite was used in Ancient Egypt to form columns on numerous scales as well as the many figural statues and monuments.
This column is French carved and created during the 18th century when all things classical were taking strong hold in the art world again.
Neoclassicism was based on the theory that the ideal beauty was known by the ancients and that it can be attained once again by imitation of the models left by the Greeks and Roman cultures. The discovery and excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum suddenly provided the 18th century with a wealth of models. |
