Marble Portrait Medallion In Ormolu & Porphyry Frame
A Fine 18th century Italian Empire Carved marble portrait medallion set in an ormolu or gilt bronze mounted Porphyry and agate frame. Italian, circa: 1790-1800. Measuring: 3.75" by 3.25. Weight: 5 pounds.

The fine carved carrara white marble oval portrait depicts a Roman. The Medallion is set into an Avoid carved specimen of Egyptian Imperial * Porphyry mounted further in an ormolu mounted agate hardstone frame. A fine example of the art work which emerged from Italy during the * Grand Tour.

The frame: Lost wax method of bronze casting. Hand chasing and chiseling of the surface. The ormolu is Mercury gilded with both Matt finish and highly burnished areas of highlight. Gilding is original and in tact.
