A Fine and large pair of 2nd Empire ormolu or gilt bronze three light wall sconces. French, Napoleon III, circa: 1850-1860. Measuring: 18" high by 11" wide.

An exceptional pair of Neoclassical sconces or Wall-Lights after a design by Jean-Louis Prieur, each backplate in the form of a fluted flaming torch supporting three scroll branches and acanthus leaved candle-nozzles.

Literature:

The present pair is inspired from a large group of wall-lights delivered for use in the Royal Palaces from about 1775. A similar pair at Fontainebleau is illustrated and discussed in the catalogue of 'Pendules et bronzes d'ameublement entre sous le Premier Empire' part 1 of the catalog of the contents of the Chateau. Another similar pair is in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, and is illustrated by Ottomeyer and Proschel, 'Vergoldete Bronzen, fig. 3.5.4.' together with Prieur's design, fig 3.5.3, also in the Getty Museum.
