Italian Empire Hand Carved Marble Urn Vase - Zanuk
An Italian Empire Neoclassical hand carved marble or Alabaster urn or vase. Italian. Circa: 1800's. Measuring: 11" high by 8.75" across at the top. Very heavy weighing several pounds.

A fine Neoclassical hand carved two handled vase. Carved from stone the classical piece of art is done after early ancient pieces of Antiquity. Each handle exhibits faces or masks. Master carving of superior quality.

I have taken the liberty of placing a small votive candle inside and lighting it and taking a photograph to show how it would look if one were to add this option. When illuminated it shows all the amazing patterns and veining of the stone.

This was known as the "ZANUCK VASE" from his collection and was admired for its beauty and rarity.

Outstanding original condition with no restoration of any kind. Important note are the handles, which are carved from the solid mass of marble and done seperately. They are in excellent original condition which is scarce to find on such an object.

A C.O.A. issued and signed by his daughter Darrylin Zanuck comes with the sale of the vase.

Literature:

Darryl Francis Zanuck (1902-1979) One of the kingpins of Hollywood's studio system, After a well-paid apprenticeship with Mack Sennett, 'Syd Chaplin' and Carl Laemmle, Zanuck hit his stride by devising (with 'Malcolm St. Clair') the Rin Tin Tin series of police-dog movies for Warner Brothers. For Warner, under his own name and three pseudonyms, he ground out as many as 19 scripts a year, and became head of production at age 23. He helped forge that studio's style with such films as Jazz Singer, The (1927), _The Public Enemy and I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932); in 1933, after the Warners made it clear that Zanuck would never be more than an employee, he quit to form Twentieth Century Films (with backing from Louis B. Mayer and 'Joseph M. Schenck'). In 1935, Twentieth absorbed a bankrupt giant, Fox: Zanuck ruled the combined studio for decades. He became known as the most "hands-on" of the major studio bosses.
