| A Fine Louis XVI gilt bronze and TortoiseShell Snuff box. French, circa:
1775-1785. Measuring: 2.75" across by 1" high. This Wonderful 18th
century Ormolu snuff box is exceptionally made. The shape is rare as
round boxes are scarce to find in this period but prized when
discovered. In original stunning condition with Superb Gilding still in
tact. The Top lid of the box is mounted with a Dark brown Tortoise Shell, the
same "Shell" found on English Tea Caddies. This wonderful rich
Material is prized and well sought after in boxes of any nature. The top
shows a fine engraved design of two birds. It is very faint and only
seen when held a certain way or light illuminates it. The Craftsman
who created this rare snuff box even placed a specimen of Mother Of
Pearl at the bottom. I think this was intended to pick up and reflect
back light that may pass through the shell top in order to show the
beauty and varied hughes of rich brown that the Shell displays. |
